PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS

Sailboat Handling Under Power
$24.95, 45 min.
Our best seller! Stop the yelling and botched landings. Here's a lesson in driving, docking crew teamwork skills. Hosted by charter company owner and seasoned sailor Ray Rutledge of Friday Harbor Washington. Even if you, as the skipper, are pretty confident in your basic boat docking and driving skills, the chances are that your crew members are not. Aunts, uncles, neighbors, friends who go sailing with you have no idea where to stand, and what to do with that rope in their hand. This tape is a great way to show them how the crew works together in and around the marina.

Sailboat Systems
60 min. $24.95
An introduction to the systems on cruising yachts, similar to the detailed checkout prior to bareboat chartering. We start with a Hunter Legend 40 and do a bow to stern checkout. We also compare systems on other common cruising yachts. System overviews include: electrical AC and DC, various stoves, head operation, batteries, daily engine checks, cockpit engine operations, helm, anchor locker and equipment, lazy jacks, and running rigging. Another good orientation video to show the friends and family who go cruising with you.

Inspecting Your Rig 90 min. $24.95
If you've always wished you understood rigging better, this is the tape for you. Learn about the components that make up rigging, what goes wrong, what's dangerous, maintenance tips. Hosted by rigger/author Brion Toss of Port Townsend, Washington. The first third of the program looks at components in the shop. Learn to identify parts and understand what can go wrong with each. In the second third of the program, Brion Toss takes you on a dock walk to spot good and bad rigging situations on various boats. In the third part of the program, Toss does a full inspection.

Tuning Your Rig
90 min. $24.95
Host Brion Toss covers the fundamentals of rig tuning. Features include: explanation of wire rope characteristics, the famous Brion Toss Bunjee mast demo, a dockside tune on four different yachts, a look at three ways to measure rig tension, and an on-the-water dynamic tune.

Going Aloft
60 min. $24.95
Don't dangle dangerously. Master rigger Brion Toss covers safety, chairs, harnesses, related knots, gear, and crew teamwork. Yes, there have been many people who have dropped from high up the mast and the result was usually unpleasant. It's not something to start thinking about in a storm when you have to do it. Get a good lesson ahead of time!

InstallingSTA-LOKS
30 min. $19.95
STA-LOKS and Norseman fittings look easy to install. Just screw them on. Right? Wrong. This half-hour video is packed with useful tips on how to choose components, measuring and cutting proper lengths on your wire, tips on installation, weatherproofing, and reusing these reusable compression fittings. Before you install hundreds of dollars worth of fittings, this video is a worthwhile investment.

Marine Plumbing
90 min. $24.95
Learn how waste and water systems work on sail or power yachts and how simple it is to service major components. Part one diagrams a basic water system with pumps, heater, and pressure tanks. Part two diagrams a waste water system with macerator pump and holding tank. Part three looks at a range of simple maintenance and repairs that anyone can do with a screwdriver and a wrench. Part four looks at installations on various power and sail boats.

Fancy Ropework - Part 1
45 min. $19.95
Learn to make double wall & crown buttons, two varieties of rail hitchings or wheel coverings, and two varieties of turks heads. These are fundamentals in fancy work from which you can invent infinite variations. Taught by former Mr. Knot on PBS' Learn to Sail series, Brion Toss.

More FancyRopework - Part 2
90 min. $24.95
Brion Toss comes back with advanced lessons: the star knot, the Matthew Walker knot, braids and sinnets for making bracelets, lanyards, etc. Any of these ropework tapes can stand alone, however parts 2 and three were done as a sequence and build on each other.

Still More Fancy Ropework - Part 3
90 min. $24.95
Brion Toss continues the part-2 lesson with more advanced braids, sinnets, and buttons for key chains, bellropes, etc. This tape gives variations on the knots featured in part two and then moves on to introduce new knots as well.

Making Eye Splices
140 min. $24.95
THE NEW IMPROVED VERSION. The old version was one hour and two splices. Now, the video has been expanded to 2 1/2 hours and eight splices including: double braid, Sta-Set X, Regatta braid, spectra with and with out cover, and an end-to-end double braid splice. Also the good old three strand splice with some tips you probably didn't know about! And a three-strand back splice for attachment to chain.

String Magic
25 min. $14.95
A fun tape for all ages. This is real magic. Brion Toss demonstrates classic slight-of-hand magic tricks with string: Two different versions of a cut and restore trick, actually cut the rope and mend it magically! And the Professor's Nightmare, a difficult but jaw-dropping bit of sleight of hand.

San Juan Islands
60 min. $24.95
A navigational and planning guide to Washington State's premiere cruising area. They are north of Port Townsend, West of Anacortes, East of Victoria, and south of Vancouver BC. They are over 400 of the most beautiful islands in the US all within a 25 mile diameter. If you have any plans to go there, watch this video!

Blake Island/Puget Sound
30 min. $19.95
A great sailing destination near Seattle is Blake island. This video is a navigational overview of the Seattle area featuring Blake Island and the mystical Tillicum Village where Pacific Northwest Native American culture is kept alive and presented daily in the form of salmon bakes, crafts, and dancing throughout the summer months.

About the Company
by president/producer Mark Herlinger
Cruiser's Guide Videos is part of my video/book publishing company called Western Media Products. I do other specialty publications as well. As a TV producer and director, I also operate a full-service broadcast/corporate production company in Denver, CO. Denver, you ask? Yes, I love to ski at 11,000 feet, just under the Continental Divide, but my Cruiser's Guide Video collection is shot near the place of my upbringing in the Pacific Northwest. I learned to sail on Puget Sound at a YMCA summer camp back in grade school. Today, as an adult teaching sailing as a certified ASA instructor, I noticed that a lot of the sailing videos on the market were weak--too much fluff and not worth the money. For years, I've made corporate training videos for large companies. So, I decided to start teaming up with some sailing experts to make a quality line of instructional tapes for yacht owners and charters. Riggers and yachtsmen like Brion Toss and Ray Rutledge are featured in many of my tapes. In addition to the tapes that I produce, you'll see a number of tapes and books from other publishers. I carefully select those that I think are of exceptional quality to place in my offering. So, unlike other catalogs where you never know what you're getting, you may rely on the educational integrity of our video programs and books. If you have questions, call me directly at 303-455-4177. Thank you. RETURN TO MENU
